Christchurch earthquake February 2011

Watching from Wellington

Christchurch earthquake February 2011

I saw God on the television

brewing tea on an ancient primus

digging a loo in her garden

saying “kia kaha” from Afghanistan

I heard Jesus on the radio

singing of mateship and tragedy and faith

calling for help to shovel liquefaction

weeping in cathedral square

I read the Holy Spirit blogging

twittering in a thousand voices

rising up on Facebook

offering cups of water, a sandwich, a bed

We sense the sacred space contracting

strangers hugging

shoulders squeezed by spirit-sanitized hands

feel the tender lift of a stretcher

hearts stretched to not-quite-breaking

warm tears on a weary face
